In the 1960's and 70's NASA invested in creating a material to protect pilots and astronauts against the forces of acceleration. The material was found to be so successful at conforming to the body and absorbing energy from stress points, that the material was introduced into the commercial market as mattresses, toppers and pillows. This material is commonly called Memory Foam or formally, Visco-Elastic Polyurethane foam. Visco means resistant to change and elastic means returning to an original shape. The combination of visco and elastic properties creates a mattress that both conforms and supports the body.
